Loras College is offering its first learn-to-swim program! For all students between the ages of 4 – 14. We offer six progressive steps for swimmers to accomplish in order to be safe around water and learn how to swim. Our focus will be on safety first, starting with the basic floats and simple strokes, to refining their abilities as a swimmer, and then finally learning the basics of competitive swimming. Each swimmer will work with a certified Red Cross lifeguard, specifically trained on how to work with students in this learn-to-swim program. Our class sizes are small (max. of 4 swimmers) meaning your student will spend more time in the water working on their swimming!

If you have taken lessons through Loras before please register for the class that had been recommended by your previous instructor. We check to make sure that all swimmers that have signed up for a class (and have taken lessons previously through Loras) are signed up for the right class. Lil’ Dewies (Level 1) (YMCA: Pike/Eel, DASH: Splash)
Age 4+, there are no skill requirements to join this group, other than a willingness to work with an instructor!
Swimmers learn the basics of water orientation: entering and exiting the water safely, bobbing, going underwater, supported front and back floating. Swimmers will also learn the start to supported rolling over from front to back and back to front, supported flutter kick, and supported front crawl arms.
Splashers (Level 2) (YMCA: Starfish, DASH: Tadpole)
Requirements: Swimmers should be comfortable sticking their face in the water and blowing bubbles and be able to float independent of an instructor with their floatation device, sinking down and coming up in the shallow end (4 ft) on their own without a floatation device.
Swimmers will work on: independent front and back floating, rolling over from front to back and back to front independently, front and back glides, front crawl arms and kicks, back crawl arms and kicks, retrieving underwater objects, and jumping into water over their head.
Waves (Level 3) (YMCA: Guppy, DASH: Minnow)
Requirements: floating without a floatation device (or help from instructor), basic treading water, submerging to retrieve a toy in the shallow end, rolling over and back on their own, bobs along the side of the wall, and front floats and back floats.
Swimmers will work on: gliding, freestyle with side breathing, introduction to front crawl and backstroke, retrieving objects in deeper water, treading water, jumping into deep water and jumping into deep water (beginning the dive progression)
Purple Tides (Level 4) (YMCA: Minnow, DASH: Jellyfish)
Requirements: Basic understanding of front and back crawl and rhythmic breathing, comfort treading water/floating in the deep end, and basic understanding of diving into deep end (kneeling dive).
Swimmers should already be able to: swim front and back crawl 25 yards. Swimmers will work on: rotary breathing, freestyle, backstroke, elementary backstroke, scissors kick and sidestroke, whip kick and breaststroke, intro to turning at wall, treading water with modified scissors, and diving in kneeling position.
Gold Fins (Level 5) (YMCA: Fish, DASH: Seal)
Requirements: swim front crawl & back crawl 25 yards without stopping or assistant, treading water for 30 seconds without assistance, bilateral breathing on freestyle, streamline when pushing off the walls.
Swimmers will work on: basic freestyle technique basic backstroke technique, introduction to whip kick, and introduction to breaststroke. Swimmers will also continue to refine their diving ability to include going off the blocks.
Duhawks (Level 6) (YMCA: Shark, DASH: Shark)
Requirements: understanding of breaststroke, 50 yards of freestyle and backstroke, ability to do a compact dive without assistance, and comfort going off the blocks for a dive.
Swimmers will work on: front and back crawl to 100 yards without stopping, elementary backstroke 25 yards, breaststroke 25 yards, introduction to butterfly, tread water for 3 minutes, and dive. They will also work on front and back crawl flip turn, breaststroke turn, breaststroke turn and pullout, and butterfly turn.
